Varieties Lingo
Key Terms (that might be helpful to know!):
- First Cuts – This occurs after Thanksgiving break, and is a chance for skits to display songs and plot. It is closed to the public and serves as a trial run for the pairings.
- Pairings – the various Greek Houses (usually, but anyone can be involved) will be paired according to serenade preferences and numbers of participating members in the house
- Patents – skit plot ideas
- Positions on VCC:
- Producer- Oversees the planning and implementation of Varieties
- Assistant Producer – Assists the Producer with logistics vital to the implementation of Varieties
- Dramatics – these individuals will assist skit pairings. There are usually 3-4 dramatics, they each are assigned one or two pairings and will go to practices, answer questions, give suggestions, etc.
- Judges and Trophies – this individual coordinates a panel of judges for each performance and coordinates with them so they understand how everything is working. They also take care of ordering trophies.
- Emcees and Vignettes – this individual coordinates and recruits emcees and vignettes
- Public Relations – Advertisements, press releases, etc.
- Technical Director -Works with pairings to organize lights & sound requirements
- Stage Director - Works with pairings to organize stage requirements
- Second Cuts – Two weekends in the middle of February each with two Saturday shows. Each Saturday will be a different show, the top will make it to Sweepstakes.
- Serenade – the process by which the houses rank each other to determine the pairs. The women serenade the men.
- Skits: Pairings of Greek houses (usually, but anyone can be involved) who put on a 20 minute skit with five songs with original lyrics
- Sweepstakes – the final show in late February, the best of the best
- Varts – short for Varieties
- VCC – Varieties Central Committee, the group of students you will work with closely to produce this big event
- Vignettes – short skits, up to 10 minutes involving any type of talent (singing, dancing, bands, juggling, comedy acts, etc)
