As a scion of an illustrious musical family, Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa is one of the brightest lights on Havana’s thriving jazz scene. Son of drummer Ruy López-Nussa and nephew of pianist Ernan López-Nussa, Harold gained international attention when he won top honors at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005 (a triumph that earned him a featured festival spot the following year).

El Viaje, López-Nusa’s 2016 release on Mack Avenue Records, visits many genres of music and travels smoothly between Harold’s classical, native, and jazz inspirations. The album reached No. 1 on iTunes Jazz Chart and No. 2 on Amazon’s Jazz Chart and features The Harold López-Nussa Trio with younger brother Ruy López-Nussa on drums and percussion, another star in the distinguished López-Nussa family of renowned Cuban musicians.

López-Nusa’s latest album, Un Día Cualquiera, was released in June of 2018 and is a forceful statement from a Cuban musician leading his tight-knit Cuban band, recorded in the U.S., and influenced by music from both countries in ways that transcend narrow notions of “Latin jazz.” The album nods to classic Cuban composers and musicians, but it focuses mostly on López-Nussa’s original compositions and his distinctive trio concept.

Recent performances at The Montreux, Monterey, Montreal and Tokyo Jazz Festivals; The Kennedy Center; and The San Francisco Jazz Center have fortified Harold’s reputation as a profound musician of rising stature who has fully integrated his classical training and love of the jazz continuum, with his Cuban roots and soul.

A jazz combo from the ISU Department of Music and Theatre will open the concert.

This will be a SEATED concert.
